How to grow nanohana seeds

更新日 : 2025.12.13

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey!
The seeds in the bag alone can produce a nanohana field equivalent to about 2 tatami mats!

Seed sowing: September to October (or December to January on the Miura Peninsula because of its mild climate!)
Flowering: February - May

Special care: None in particular

Sunlight: It prefers a sunny location. After budding, it needs to be exposed to cold weather to fully flower.

Soil: Any location. Avoid areas that dry out quickly.
*Mixing humus with compound fertilizer (white) and cattle manure compost will help them grow well.

Thinning: Thin out the plants when the true leaves are 2 to 3, so that the space between the plants is about 7 cm. Crowding will result in thinning of the stems.

Pest control: Pests such as aphids and caterpillars are easily attracted to the plant. Regular observation and early treatment of any infestations or mixing a systemic insecticide into the soil at planting will help prevent them.

Harvesting (when to eat): The best time to harvest is when the buds appear and the plant is 20 to 30 cm tall. Cut off the stems with flower buds 5 to 6 cm from the base while they are still tender.

When boiled and eaten:
First, wash with water.
(1) Boil water in a pot and add about 1 teaspoon of salt.
(2) Add the stems first and boil for 1 minute.
(3) Put the bud side in and boil for about 30 seconds.
Immediately drain in a colander and cool in cold water.
(5) Squeeze out the water.
After this, it can be boiled or fried.
